Student fills in at Funeral when technology glitch hindered music

I was touched by this post from a fellow Simply Music teacher, that landed in my Inbox this morning.

A student of mine had an experience recently, which emphasizes the benefits of the Simply Music method (and the virtues of keeping the Playlist alive!).

Emily (age 12), is currently nearing the end of Level 6. She and her mother attended a funeral recently, which included a a PowerPoint photo presentation, with accompanying recorded music from a laptop. Unfortunately, as the Organizer/Moderator person set up before the program, she discovered a technology glitch and could not get the music to play with the photos, much to her great disappointment. Emily observed the dilemna and offered to provide the music on the spot. The Organizer was flabbergasted, and asked, “Right now? With no warning?” Emily said, “Sure!” She and her mother made a quick list of appropriate songs from her Playlist and she played confidently throughout the photo tribute – in the dark, no less, since the lights were turned off for viewing the photo slideshow! Naturally, as she didn’t have to depend on music, all she needed was the least bit of light to see her hand positions! Of course, everyone was amazed at such a young person being able to perform in public to that degree; but in addition, they were stunned she could do it at the drop of a hat. Attendees heartily congratulated her and were very curious about where she “learned to play like that.” …

Wouldn’t you say this is a mighty fine reason to maintain a strong Playlist? If your students struggle to keep their Playlist strong, tell them Emily’s story. Needless to say, I am immensely proud of Emily !!
